ABSTRACT PAINTING

Christine Fogel’s new abstracts capture and reinterpret the light, open spaces, and colors of the New American South and Southwest.  From her subdued landscapes and seascapes to her more vivid motion studies, these recent works display the influence of the unique lighting conditions of her geographic locales, established through a carefully chosen color palette. Her new works display a blend of texture and emphatic motion grounded in the vibrancy of her tones.

Christine Fogel has spent the past 15 years of her career alternating between professional work and interpretive artistic endeavor. As an art director, she has collaborated with Fortune 500 companies on presentations for large conventions, product launches, and exhibits. All the while, she has been accumulating an ever-widening array of artistic credentials through her multi-media explorations of space and structure. She has produced paintings and sculptures for the wide variety of shows in which she has participated. These include:

DIORAMAS & COLLAGES

The nature of the art form is to express a whimsical or fantastic idea in a manner that is easy on the eye yet challenging to the brain. Christine Fogel’s miniature dreamscapes are composed of toys, photographs, postcards, and odd bits of found art, juxtaposed into 3-dimensional snapshots. They elicit a smile while stirring the imagination.

Using found and discarded objects, Christine creates highly inventive, thought-provoking collages and shadow boxes that evoke lyrical, witty, and often whimsical scenes. She has a particular affinity for the dichotomy between nature and man-made environments—people appear caught off balance, isolated from nature and each other.

PHOTOGRAPHS

Christine Fogel’s photographs quirkily illuminate the everyday adventure of living in a world filled with wonders. Though her subjects are captured through the lens of a documentarian, her unending quest for the slightly off-kilter informs every frame. Thus a stare becomes a question, a stairway, a hallucinatory descension. Ms. Fogel isolates her focal point through lighting, position, and the off-center angle at which she often places her camera. Her street-smart style was influenced through her studies with Eugene Smith, Garry Winogrand, and Diane Arbus, but her work has taken its own direction. Thus she offers a captivating and intelligent view of what might seem commonplace, finding delight in discovering a kernel of magic in otherwise ordinary subjects.

She received her BFA from The Cooper Union, School of Art, 1972.

Her work is in private collections throughout the US.
She lives in the Florida and is a graphic designer.
